Early April Pike Fishing
April 3rd-5th --
Apr 5, 2009 --
-Last snowmachine trip of the year. Bill and two friends from work finally got all of his materials on his land so he can build our 2nd cabin for over night pike, trout and salmon fishing trips. The weather was great and so was the ice fishing for pike. The largest pike caught was 40 inches and was near 20 pounds. The most exciting part of the trip came Just after Bill caught that large pike. John Depriest hooked the lunker of the lake about 20 minutes after Bill pulled out that 40 incher. John fought what was on the end of his line about 20 seconds when we thought he must have the new world record based on just how hard it was pulling. Just a few seconds later water started to come up through the hole and the 3 of use looked closely to see just how big that fish was. To our surprise the jaws and teeth that came out snapping were not those of a pike. A medium sized river otter had bitten the fish John was using as bait. After a few minutes of chasing then running away from that otter John had his prize. If the single hook had not been so far down the otters throat I would not have guessed the otter bit on purpose. I guess John is the all-time ice fishing champion.....for river otter anyway.
